Groups Currently Running

Writers’ Block --  This group uses a combination of “hands on” strategies and process discussions. The “hands on” components include setting realistic goals, behavioral strategies, mapping out project, relaxation techniques, cognitive strategies, and etc. Process discussions often address motivational problems, fear of failure (or success), anxiety, depression and hopelessness, procrastination, avoidance, feeling overwhelmed, working with difficult agents, publishers or committee members, and negative experiences that create barriers to productive writing.

Groups Now Forming

General Therapy – This is a psychotherapy process group in which members discuss personal issues such as family problems, relationship issues, feelings of isolation, depression, anxiety, anger, and etc.   Because all members are graduate students, they understand the myriad of stresses that graduate students encounter.

Group for TherapistsThis is a process group for people in the mental health profession. As members of the mental health professions, we carry the burdens of many people. It is also important for us to have a place todecompress, unload, work on our problems, and receive support and nurturance. It is also important for us to continually work on ourselves, so that we can better help our clients. This group is here to provide a safe, constructive space for us.
LGBT SupportThis group is intended to provide a safe space for members to discuss both issues particular to the LGBT community such as coming out, internalized negativity, rejection from family, religious struggles, same-gender relationships, etc., as well as general life problems. You can be yourself, knowing that your fellow members “get” the LGBT part of you.
Grief Group - It is often helpful to talk with people who truly understand the pain of losing a love.  This group will provide support and help people walk through the stages of grief with others who care.

Therapy Groups
Groups provide an excellent format for exploring a variety of issues, including interpersonal problems with friends and coworkers, family problems, depression, anxiety, self-esteem problems, relationship break-ups, and etc.
Groups may be psycho-educational, wherein members participate in directed activities and discussions or process, where members discuss their problems in an unstructured manner. Some groups are made up of members who share a common trait or problem (e.g. writers’ block, eating issues, fibromyalgia, coming out, shyness, or biracial challenges), others are comprised of people coming together with all different types of concerns. Members can be very helpful in supporting one another, motivating each other, and challenging each other to grow. Groups provide a unique opportunity for members to hear honest, constructive feedback from other members and to discover how they are perceived by others. Members are encouraged to provide feedback in a supportive manner. Members are also asked to maintain the confidentiality of their fellow members.

Group Intake. Before joining a group, potential members meet with the group leader(s) for a Group Intake Appointment. During this appointment potential members have the opportunity to meet the leader(s), to learn more about the group, and to ask any questions they might have. Another goal of the Group Intake is to make sure that a certain group would be the best treatment option for addressing a client’s particular problems.
Size: 5 to 10 members
